Nat’s Space

Challenging myself to make for the web

Since starting this blog, I have found it hard to sit down and write. Bear Blog is a place primarily focused on writing, and I have wanted to live up to it. However, at the end of the day, I want to build.

At the same time, while browsing the many other amazing personal sites on Bear Blog (along with NeoCities, through peoples blog rolls, bubbles.town, etc), I have discovered the personal web 1. I find it so fascinating that people are building their own spaces, tools, and communities in ways that are both tried-and-true 2, but also trying to innovate and move the internet into a more open space. 3 I want to be a part of something like that. I also want a place where I can experiment and express myself, without the limits of a blogging platform (Even one as nice as Bear).

So I set up a static site, I'm calling Handmade (for now). This will be the home of the challenge I want to undertake. I will not be using any off the shelf static site generators, web framework, or any other code I didn't personally write. I want to build everything myself. I hope to learn some things about the indie web, front end development, and maybe answer some larger questions and build some projects I have bubbling around my head. I plan on documenting my experience here on this blog.

As of posting this, it's just a simple HTML page, but I hope I can turn it into some place special.
